AUTISM AND AYURVEDA

What is Autism?
Autism is a kind of neurodegenerative disorder of infancy.

What are characteristics of Autism?
  1. Difficulties with social interaction
  2. Display problems with verbal and nonverbal communication
  3. Exhibit repetitive behaviors of limited and obsessive interests.

The impact of these behaviors may range from mild to disabilities.
Autism varies widely in its severity in symptoms and may go unrecognized, especially in mildly affected children or when more debilitating handicaps cover it.
The signs of Autism are generally visible by the age of 2-3 years and prevalent in about 6-8 children out of 1000 births.

What are causes of Autism?

Scientists are not certain what cause autism, but it is likely that both genetics and environment play a role.
But, it is recently researched that the following may be the causes of Autism:
  1. Brain impairment due to Mercury and other Toxic Metals
  2. Viruses stored in the body because of Vaccines
  3. Compromised Immunity because of Vaccines and Mercury
  4. Yeast and germs built in digestive system because of Antibiotics usage at early age.

What are the symptoms of Autism?
  1. Social interactions and relationships : Significant problems developing into non-verbal communication skills, such as eye-to-eye gazing, facial expressions, and body posture. Failure to establish friendships with children of the same age. Lack of interest in sharing enjoyment, interests or achievements with other people.  Lack of empathy. People with autism may have difficulty in understanding another person's feelings, such as pain or sorrow.
  2. Verbal and nonverbal communication: Delay in, or lack of, learning to talk. As many as 50% of people with autism are unable to speak. Problems in taking steps to start a conversation. Also, people with autism have difficulties in continuing a conversation once it starts. Stereotyped and repetitive use of language: People with autism often repeat over and over a phrase they have heard previously (echolalia). Difficulty understanding their listener's perspective. For example, a person with autism may not understand someone using humor. They may interpret the communication word to word and fail to get the implied meaning.
  3. Limited interests in activities or play: An unusual focus on fragments: Younger children with autism often focus on  toys by its part such as wheels of a toy car etc., rather than playing with the entire toy. Preoccupation with certain topics: For example, elder children and adults may feel fascinated by train schedules, weather patterns, or license plates. A need for evenness in routines: For example, a child with autism may always need to eat bread before salad and insist on driving the same route every day to school. Stereotyped behaviors: These may include body rocking and hand flapping.

General symptoms of Autism:
Though the symptoms of each Autistic child are unique, the general ones are:

  • Autism sufferers do not understand the voice tone and body language.
  • Lack of slang.
  • Poor eye contact
  • Tries to remain alone.
  • Do not respond to any call. Not even his or her name.

Symptoms of Autism during childhood:

Autism are usually noticed in the beginning by parents and other caregivers sometime during the child's first 3 years. Although autism is present at birth (congenital), signs of the disorder can be difficult to identify or diagnose during infancy. Parents often get concerned when their toddler does not like to be held; does not seem interested in playing certain games and does not start speaking. They also may be confused about their child's hearing abilities. It often seems that a child with autism does not hear, but he or she may appear to hear a noice from distant background noise like a whistle of a train etc.
With early and intensive treatment, most children improve their ability to relate to others, communicate, and help themselves as they grow older. Contrary to popular myths about children with autism, very few are socially isolated completely or "live in a world of their own."

Other symptoms of Autism:

About 10% of people with autism possess some form of special limited gifts such as memorizing lists, calculating calendar dates, drawing, or musical ability.
Many people with autism have unusual sensory perceptions. For example, they may describe a light touch as painful and deep pressure that provides a calm feeling. Others may not feel pain at all. Some people with autism have strong food likes and dislikes and unusual preoccupations.
Mental retardation is present in almost 75 % of autistic children. In the natural course, no significant developmental progress occurs in half, while a minimal improvement may be observed in the rest. Seizures occur in about 25 percent.

What is the prognosis ?

For many children, autism symptoms improve with treatment and with aging. Some children with autism grow up to lead normal or near-normal lives. Children whose language skills regress early in life, usually before the age of three, appear to be at risk of developing epilepsy or seizure-like brain activity. During adolescence, some children with autism may become depressed or experience behavioral problems. Parents of these children should take treatments for their child as soon as possible.

What are the treatments for Autism?

Ayurveda for Hyperactivity & Attention Deficit Disorder in Children

Ayurvedic Medicine approaches the subject of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) from an elemental and doshic perspective. It is this understanding that leads to a complete model of management that is truly holistic and integrates the care of the body, mind, and spirit of the patient.

The Ayurvedic approach to the management of ADD and ADHD is the process of assisting the patient to build a stronger state to control the energy without creating suppression of the increased energies.

Managing any condition through Ayurveda requires care for the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of the patient. Care of the physical body is essential to the care of the mind. Hence, a diet that is nourishing and little oily is important. Nourishment is the key to increasing stability.

Spiritually, Ayurveda views all people as being in the physical world for the purpose of learning important lessons which ultimately aid the soul toward the attainment of enlightenment. Every difficult life circumstance is a lesson or opportunity for growth. What is to be learned is not often easy for another person to identify. Learning is an internal process of self–observation. While children find self-observation difficult, it is important that parents create a supportive environment for self–exploration at the child’s pace. This can include reading books with important morals and which demonstrate growing self awareness and planting subtle seeds of insight that might germinate in the child’s future. Child counselors can also play an important role through the variety of techniques they are trained in to affect a child’s consciousness.

On the mental level and emotional level, Ayurveda approaches the condition through the use of herbs. Herbs which are useful for mental problmes are:

1. Brahmi : Rejuvenates mind. Helpful in ADD and many other mental and nervous disorders.
2. Gotu kola: Helpful in ADD and ADHD.
3. Ashwagandha: Nourishes brain and improves IQ.
4. Shankh pushpi: Promotes memory. Helpful in depression, psychosis and epilepsy.
5. Calamus (Vacha): Stimulates brain and helps in speech disorders.
6. Jatamansi: Improves memory and relaxes mind.

Ayurvedic medicines to consider for rejuvenating the mind and the nervous system are:

1. Suvarna prashan
2. Brahmi vati
3. Smriti sagar ras
4. Brahma rasayana
5. Ashwagandharishta
6. Brahmi ghee
7. Saraswat churna, etc.

There is no end to the variety and usefulness of Ayurvedic herbs and home remedies for children. Most herbs are safe and very effective when used skillfully, constitutionally, and in appropriate doses. (P.S: Consult any Ayurvedic doctor before having these medicines.)

Ayurveda also recommends consistent routines surrounding bed time and meals as well as the overall daily routine. Routines are essential to creating stability of the mind. The condition is exacerbated by irregular routines.

In summary, Ayurveda offers the patient with ADD and ADHD an alternative approach to the care of the psyche that respects their individuality and recognizes their gifts as well as their challenges. Care is systemic and holistic and emphasizes maximizing the potential of the patient without suppressing their natural gifts. Complete care includes lifestyle and diet as well as the application of herbs.

Fight and destroy Musular dystrophy with Ayurveda

                                   Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a severe genetic degenerative disorder of muscle tissue.

Characteristics of DMD:
  • Onset of muscle weakness usually before 4 years of age,
  • Selective muscle involvement of pelvic and pectoral girdles,
  • Hypertrophy of the calves muscle,
  • Grossly elevated serum CPK levels and
  • Relentlessly progressive weakness of muscle, leading to inability to work within 10 years of onset and later to contractures and thoracic deformity. There is no specific cure in any system of medicine and the death usually occurs before the age of 20 years caused by respiratory failure or less frequently by cardiac involvement.
Treatment of DMD:

At present no treatment is known in any system of medicine which has any definite influence upon muscular dystrophy. According to the research, Ayurvedic treatment involving medicine and Panchakarma massage, Yoga and Pranayama have shown definite protective influence and longer survival upon muscular dystrophy.

Ayurvedic treatments:
  1. Mamsagni Rasayana which contains Curcuma longa, Withania somnifera, Terminalia arjuna, Tinospora cordifolia, Suvarna bhasma, Praval, etc.
  2. Ashwagandha arishta / Bala arishta

Panchakarma therapies:
  1. Abhyangam with Shat bala prasarini tailam
  2. Pizichil with Chandan bala lakshaadi tailam
  3. Til-Mash Pinda Sweda with use of herbs like Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Bala (Sida cordifolia), and Ashwagandha (W. somnifera), and Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), and Haridra (Curcuma domestica), and Daru Haridra (Berberis aristata), and Mustaka (Cyperus rotundus), and Barbreng (Embelia ribes), and Mamsa Rohini: (Soymida febrifuda) as additional ingredients to Til, Masha, unpolished rice and wheat bran, all cooked in the decoction of Bala (Sida cordifolia), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and milk.
  4. Anuvasana basti with Shatbala-Prasarni oil or Mustaadi yapan basti.

Benefits from the Ayurveda treatment:

  • Delays or slowdowns or reverse the progressive muscular degeneration.
  • Retards the muscular degeneration due to fat deposition.
  • Weight loss
  • Reduces serum Creatine Phosphokinase (CPK) levels thus helping to reduce the muscle damage.
  • Allows longer survival by increasing muscle CPK enzyme.
  • Improves muscle tone and functional abilities.
  • Helps to stabilize the Sarcolemma membrane defect in the muscle fibres.
  • It also remove excess fat deposition in the muscle and increases muscle power.
Yoga and Pranayam:

Pranayamas – Anulom-Vilom, Kapalbhati, Bhastrika.
Yoga asana - Pawan muktasana, Padmasana, Veer bhadrasana, Parvatasana, Surya namaskar.

Diet:
Avoid saturated fats and refined foods.
Sea vegetables, fruits, whole grains, essential fatty acid and legumes should be taken.

Other treatments:
Physiotherapy is very helpful in DMD.
Vitamin E, B-complex and minerals like Selenium too help to reduce the effects of DMD.

Conclusion:
Though genes are considered to be the culprit for the disease, there are a good number of DMD patients who do not have a family history of the disease. So, a person should undergo tests to diagnose DMD and contact Ayurvedic doctors at earliest to help such kids to be independent and have a long life.
